A kløtsjsystem, often translated as a clutch system, is a mechanical device that engages and disengages power transmission, typically between a rotating power source like an engine and a driven component like a transmission or drivetrain. Its primary function is to allow for smooth starting and stopping of movement, as well as to facilitate gear changes in vehicles.

The most common type of kløtsjsystem operates via friction. It usually consists of two main parts: a driving member connected to the power source and a driven member connected to the output. When the kløtsj is engaged, these two members are pressed together, transferring rotational force. When disengaged, they are separated, interrupting the power flow.

In manual transmission vehicles, the kløtsj is operated by a pedal. Pressing the pedal disengages the kløtsj, allowing the driver to select a different gear without damaging the transmission. Releasing the pedal gradually re-engages the kløtsj, smoothly transferring power to the wheels. Automated kløtsjsystemer, found in some automatic transmissions and semi-automatic vehicles, perform this function without direct driver input.
