Klädåtering is a Swedish practice in which individuals alter or change their clothing in a communal or semi‑public setting. The term derives from the Swedish words kläd (“clothing”) and åtning (“alteration”), and it is primarily associated with traditional rural communities where individuals bring garments to a local kinship or clan for repair, tailoring, or modification. The activity serves both functional and social purposes, allowing for the preservation of fabric, the sharing of dyeing or embroidery techniques, and the reinforcement of group identity.

Historically, klädåtering was a necessary service in areas lacking access to commercial dressmakers or textile supplies. Families would convene during specific times of the year, often after harvest, to bring clothes for mending or the production of new garments from local wool, linen or cotton. Hand‑made changes such as changing sleeves, adding hems, or patching tears were common, and the process often involved collective storytelling and the passing down of textile knowledge.

The practice also has cultural significance in rites of passage. In some regions, blessings over newly altered clothes were performed during life milestones, such as marriages or coming‑of‑age ceremonies, symbolizing both protection and continuity.
