Kloraatteja are salts or esters of chloric acid, with the chemical formula ClO3-. They are a class of inorganic compounds characterized by the presence of the chlorate anion (ClO3-). Chloric acid itself is a strong acid and is unstable, readily decomposing. Its salts, however, are generally more stable. Many kloraatteja are colorless crystalline solids that are soluble in water.

The most common kloraatti is potassium chlorate (KClO3), which has been used in various applications, including pyrotechnics, safety matches, and as an oxidizing agent. Other notable kloraatteja include sodium chlorate (NaClO3), used in herbicides and as a precursor for other chemicals, and barium chlorate (Ba(ClO3)2).

Kloraatteja are powerful oxidizing agents. This property means they can readily react with and ignite flammable materials, making them useful in explosives and fireworks. Due to their oxidizing nature and potential for rapid decomposition, kloraatteja must be handled with care to avoid dangerous reactions. They are typically stored separately from combustible materials. Ingestion of kloraatteja can be toxic, affecting the blood and kidneys. Their production often involves the electrolysis of chloride solutions.
