Kirjoitusoikeus is a Finnish term that denotes the permission to write, modify, or delete data within a system, document, or repository. It is one component of access control, alongside read rights (lukuoikeus) and, in many systems, execute rights. The concept is used across file systems, databases, content management systems, and collaborative platforms.

In practical terms, kirjoitusoikeus determines who may change content. On a file system, write permission on a file allows altering its contents; on a directory, write permission enables creating, renaming, or deleting files within that directory (often requiring additional execute permission to access the directory structure). In databases and applications, write access permits operations such as insert, update, or delete data, depending on the system’s permissions model. In wikis or content management systems, kirjoitusoikeus enables editing pages or contributing content, and may be scoped to specific areas or roles.

Access rights are typically managed through mechanisms such as access control lists (ACLs), role-based access control (RBAC), or attribute-based access control (ABAC). The principle of least privilege encourages granting only the minimum write rights necessary for a user to perform their tasks, with regular reviews and logging to support accountability and auditability.
