Kirjailu is a Finnish term describing the craft of inscribing text or decorative motifs onto a surface. It encompasses techniques for marking letters and designs into or onto materials such as metal, stone, wood, glass, and ceramic objects. The result can be functional, such as inscriptions on coins, plaques, or signs, or purely ornamental.

The word derives from kirjain or kirja, related to writing or letters, and the suffix -ilu, which signals a practice or craft. In common usage, kirjailu is distinct from kirjailija, the writer or author, though both share the same linguistic root related to writing.

Historically, inscription and engraving have been important across many cultures, including metalwork, stonemasonry, and jewelry. Traditional techniques include engraving (kaiverrus), etching, carving, and stamping, often performed by hand. In Finland and elsewhere, inscriptions have served commemorative, decorative, or instructional purposes, from memorial tablets to crafts and signs.

In contemporary practice, kirjailu continues as an artisan métier. Practitioners may use traditional hand tools alongside modern technologies such as laser engraving, CNC routing, and chemical etching. Projects range from custom jewelry and awards to restoration of historical artefacts and production of signs or architectural details. The field combines design, typography, and material knowledge to create durable inscriptions and decorative lettering.
