Nociceptive pain arises from damage to body tissues. It is typically sharp, aching, or throbbing, and can be further divided into somatic pain, originating from skin, muscles, joints, or bones, and visceral pain, which comes from internal organs. Examples of nociceptive pain include a sprained ankle or a stomach ache due to indigestion. This type of pain serves as a protective mechanism, signaling potential harm to the body.

Neuropathic pain results from damage or dysfunction of the nervous system itself. It is often described as burning, tingling, shooting, or electric shock-like. This pain can occur in conditions such as diabetes (diabetic neuropathy), after an injury to a nerve, or in diseases like multiple sclerosis. Unlike nociceptive pain, neuropathic pain is not a direct response to tissue damage but rather a misfiring or altered signaling within the nerves.

Other classifications of pain may include acute pain, which is of sudden onset and usually short-lived, serving as an immediate warning of injury. Chronic pain, conversely, persists for a prolonged period, often longer than three to six months, and can continue even after the initial cause has healed. Psychogenic pain is pain that has no apparent physical cause and is believed to be related to psychological factors. Recognizing these distinctions helps healthcare professionals tailor treatment strategies.
