Kipusignaalia, often translated as "pain signal," refers to the complex biological and neurological processes involved in the detection and transmission of noxious stimuli. This signaling pathway is crucial for survival, alerting an organism to potential or actual tissue damage and prompting protective responses. The process begins with nociceptors, specialized sensory nerve endings that are activated by various harmful stimuli, including mechanical pressure, extreme temperatures, and chemical irritants.

Once activated, nociceptors generate electrical impulses, or action potentials, that travel along nerve fibers. These fibers are primarily of two types: A-delta fibers, which are thinly myelinated and transmit sharp, localized pain signals quickly, and C-fibers, which are unmyelinated and convey dull, aching, or burning pain sensations more slowly. These signals ascend through the spinal cord, where they undergo initial processing and modulation at the dorsal horn.

From the spinal cord, the pain signals are relayed to various areas of the brain, including the thalamus, which acts as a relay station, and then to the somatosensory cortex, responsible for the perception of pain location and intensity. Other brain regions, such as the limbic system and prefrontal cortex, are involved in the emotional and cognitive aspects of pain, contributing to the unpleasantness and subjective experience of pain.
