Kinesthesia, or kinaesthesia, is the sense that detects and perceives movement of the body and its parts. It is a component of the broader proprioceptive system, which informs the brain about limb position, motion, and effort, enabling coordinated movement without visual input.

Kinesthesia focuses on movement sense—the perception of limb movement and the velocity and direction of motion. It is often contrasted with static proprioception, which concerns limb position when not moving. In practice, kinesthesia and proprioception overlap, and many sources use "proprioception" to mean both static position and movement.

Physiological basis: Proprioceptors such as muscle spindles, Golgi tendon organs, and joint capsule receptors provide information about muscle length, tension, and joint angle. Afferent signals travel to the spinal cord and brain via peripheral nerves; some pathways reach the cerebellum for motor coordination, while conscious perception of movement and position is mediated by the somatosensory cortex.

Function and development: Kinesthesia is essential for everyday tasks, motor learning, and activities requiring precise timing and control. It develops in infancy and relies on sensory integration with vision and the vestibular system. Disorders that impair proprioceptive signaling, such as peripheral neuropathy or stroke, can reduce kinesthetic awareness, causing clumsiness or difficulty judging limb movement.

Assessment and terminology: Clinically, kinesthetic function is evaluated through movement detection and joint-position sense tests, often with vision occluded. The term kinesthesia is sometimes used interchangeably with proprioception, though some authors reserve kinesthesia for movement sensation specifically.
