Kiemperiode, often translated as incubation period, is the time between infection with a pathogen and the first appearance of signs or symptoms of disease. In public health and epidemiology it is a key parameter used to interpret outbreak data, plan control measures, and determine quarantine or observation windows.

The kiemperiode differs from other related concepts. It is not the same as the infectious period, which is when an infected person can spread the pathogen. It is also distinct from the latent period, which in some infections is the time before a pathogen becomes capable of transmission or disease, and from generation time, which concerns the interval between successive infections in a transmission chain.

Variability and determinants: The length of the kiemperiode depends on the pathogen, the amount and route of exposure, and host factors such as age, immune status, and comorbidities. Short incubation periods include many common respiratory infections, for example influenza (roughly 1–4 days) and measles (about 10–14 days). Longer incubations are seen with diseases like chickenpox (approximately 14–21 days) and some coronaviruses (often 2–14 days, with rare longer cases); rabies can have incubation periods of weeks to months or longer.

Public health use and limitations: Knowledge of the kiemperiode informs quarantine durations, timing of contact tracing, and surveillance windows. In practice, incubation data are used to estimate the distribution of the incubation period, often summarized by medians and percentile ranges. The incubation period is not fixed and exhibits variation and uncertainty, and in diseases with pre-symptomatic transmission, control efforts can be more challenging.
