Khemia refers to the historical practice and precursor to modern chemistry. Emerging from ancient Egypt and the Hellenistic world, khemia was a blend of practical crafts, early scientific observation, and often, mystical or philosophical beliefs. It encompassed a wide range of activities, including metallurgy, dyeing, glassmaking, and the preparation of medicines and cosmetics.

The term "khemia" itself is believed to be derived from the ancient Egyptian word "Kemet," meaning black land, referring to the fertile Nile delta. Early practitioners, often called alchemists, sought not only to understand the material world but also to achieve spiritual transformation. A central, though often elusive, goal of alchemy was the transmutation of base metals, such as lead, into noble metals like gold. Another key pursuit was the creation of the elixir of life, a mythical potion believed to grant immortality or cure all diseases.

While khemia is often viewed through the lens of alchemy and its esoteric aspects, it also laid crucial groundwork for the development of chemistry. Alchemists developed laboratory techniques, apparatus, and discovered new substances and processes. Their meticulous, albeit often misguided, experimentation contributed to a growing body of knowledge about the properties of matter. Figures like Jabir ibn Hayyan in the Islamic world and later European alchemists made significant contributions to experimental methods and the understanding of chemical reactions, paving the way for the scientific revolution and the establishment of chemistry as a distinct scientific discipline.
