Keskuselimelle, also known as the central nervous system (CNS), is a complex network of neurons and supportive cells that controls and coordinates most of the body's activities. It is divided into two main parts: the brain and the spinal cord. The brain is further subdivided into the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem. The cerebrum is responsible for higher functions such as thought, memory, and voluntary movement. The cerebellum plays a crucial role in motor coordination and balance. The brainstem controls automatic functions like breathing, heart rate, and digestion.

The spinal cord, which extends from the brainstem down to the lower back, serves as a conduit for signals between the brain and the rest of the body. It also contains reflex centers that control involuntary actions like coughing and sneezing. The CNS communicates with the peripheral nervous system (PNS) through nerves that branch out from the spinal cord and brain. The PNS is further divided into the somatic nervous system, which controls voluntary movements, and the autonomic nervous system, which regulates involuntary functions like heart rate and digestion.

The CNS is protected by the skull and spinal column, which provide a physical barrier against injury. Additionally, the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) surrounding the brain and spinal cord acts as a cushion, absorbing shocks and providing nutrients to the CNS. The blood-brain barrier, a specialized system of cells that surround the brain's blood vessels, controls the passage of substances into and out of the brain, protecting it from harmful substances in the blood.

The CNS is vulnerable to various diseases and injuries, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Advances in neuroscience continue to enhance our understanding of the CNS and its functions, leading to new treatments and therapies for CNS-related conditions.
