Keratiinikyynärvarret, or keratinized forearms, refers to a condition where the skin on the forearms becomes notably thicker and tougher due to an increase in keratin production. This is a natural biological process where the epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, produces more keratin, a tough, fibrous protein that forms the protective outer layer of the skin. This thickening can occur for various reasons.

One common cause is repetitive friction or pressure on the forearms. Activities that involve prolonged or intense contact with surfaces, such as certain types of manual labor, sports like weightlifting, or even habitual resting of the forearms on hard surfaces, can stimulate the skin to produce more keratin as a protective response. This leads to the development of calluses, which are localized areas of thickened skin.

In some cases, certain dermatological conditions can also contribute to keratiinikyynärvarret. Conditions that cause increased cell turnover or inflammation in the skin might result in a buildup of keratin. While generally a protective mechanism, excessively thickened or hardened skin can sometimes become dry, cracked, or less flexible.
