Katnip is a common misspelling of catnip, a plant of the mint family, *Lamiaceae*. It is scientifically known as *Nepeta cataria*. The plant is native to Europe and Asia but has been widely introduced to many other parts of the world. Catnip is characterized by its aromatic scent and its distinctive effect on domestic cats.

The active compound in catnip is believed to be nepetalactone, an essential oil. When cats come into contact with catnip, whether by smelling, chewing, or rolling in it, they often exhibit a range of behaviors. These can include sniffing, licking, chewing, head shaking, drooling, and a playful, energetic state, sometimes followed by a period of relaxation. Not all cats react to catnip; the sensitivity is thought to be hereditary and typically develops in cats around six months of age. Kittens and older cats may show a reduced response.

Despite its common association with cats, catnip has a history of use by humans. Traditionally, it has been employed as a mild sedative, sleep aid, and for digestive issues. It has also been brewed into herbal teas. However, its primary recognition today is for its effect on felines. The plant itself is a hardy perennial herb that can grow up to three feet tall and produces small, white, or lavender flowers.
