Kasvumalleja is the Finnish term for growth models, mathematical or statistical representations of how a quantity changes over time. They are used across disciplines such as biology, ecology, economics, demography, and epidemiology to describe, analyze, and forecast the dynamics of populations, organisms, markets, or other systems.

Common examples include deterministic models such as the exponential growth model, dN/dt = rN, which describes unchecked growth, and the logistic model, dN/dt = rN(1 − N/K), which incorporates a carrying capacity. Other well-known forms are the Gompertz model, the Richards (or generalized logistic) model, and the von Bertalanffy growth function for individual growth. In discrete time, models such as the Ricker map or discrete logistic equations are often used. Stochastic variants, which incorporate random variation, are also employed in more complex analyses. Parameterized models may also include age-structured or spatially explicit versions in population biology.

Estimation of kasvumalleja relies on data-fitting methods, including non-linear least squares, maximum likelihood, or Bayesian approaches. Key parameters often include intrinsic growth rate, carrying capacity, initial value, and, in some models, shape parameters that control the curvature of the growth trajectory. Model selection and validation use criteria such as goodness-of-fit, AIC or BIC, and predictive accuracy.

Applications range from forecasting population sizes and tumor growth to modeling technology adoption and economic growth. Limitations include potential identifiability issues, sensitivity to data quality, and oversimplification of real-world dynamics, especially when environmental conditions change over time.
