Kaststart is a traditional Norwegian boat racing technique. The term "kaststart" translates to "cast start" in English. This method of starting is still used by some Nordic boat racing teams, particularly during traditional regattas.

During a kaststart, the crew of a boat awaits for a signal from the judges' boat, known as a "launch". As the launch approaches the starting line, the crew casts off their moorings and the boat drifts towards the area marked as the starting line. When the judges deem that the boat has drifted across the starting line at the correct moment, they sound a horn to signal the start of the race.

The kaststart is a procedure that requires both strength and timing, as the crew must release their boat at the precise instant, and let it drift across the line without manipulating it in any way. This technique was commonly used in the past when the water was choppy or the boats were less maneuverable.

Today, the kaststart is mostly practiced during traditional Norwegian regattas, such as the annual Holmenkollen rowing regatta, where the participants show their respect for the traditional methods that have been practiced for centuries. The use of digital timing systems has reduced the need for the complex procedures involved in kaststart starting, but many teams still honor this tradition as a way to connect with the sport's history.
