Karbéniumionokat, commonly referred to as carbocations, are highly reactive chemical intermediates characterized by a positively charged carbon atom. This positively charged carbon atom typically possesses only three valence electrons and an empty p-orbital, making it electron-deficient and eager to accept electrons from nucleophiles. The positive charge resides on a carbon atom that is bonded to at least one other carbon atom.

Carbocations can be classified based on the number of carbon atoms directly attached to the positively charged carbon: primary (1°), secondary (2°), tertiary (3°), and methyl carbocations. Tertiary carbocations are generally the most stable due to inductive effects and hyperconjugation, where the electron-donating alkyl groups stabilize the positive charge. Methyl carbocations are the least stable.

The formation of carbocations is a key step in many organic reactions, including electrophilic addition to alkenes and alkynes, electrophilic substitution on aromatic rings, and certain rearrangement reactions like the Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement. Their high reactivity stems from their electron deficiency, making them potent electrophiles.

Due to their fleeting existence, carbocations are not typically isolated. Their presence and behavior are inferred from the products of the reactions they participate in. Spectroscopic techniques, such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, can sometimes detect and characterize carbocations under specific, often low-temperature, conditions.
