Kapaszkodó, also known as the European mole (Talpa europaea), is a small, subterranean mammal belonging to the family Talpidae. The species is characterized by a pointed snout, reduced external ears, densely furred feet with powerful claws, and a bristled tail. Their vision is poorly developed, while a sensitive whisker system and trigeminal nerve sense aid in navigation and prey detection underground.

The mole inhabits temperate regions across Europe and western Asia, favoring moist, sandy or loamy soils that allow easy burrowing. Their extensive tunnel networks, which can span several hectares, provide shelter and route for foraging. Main diet consists of insect larvae, earthworms, and other invertebrates; occasional small vertebrates or seeds can supplement intake. Moles play a key role in soil aeration, nutrient cycling, and pest control by depending on subterranean invertebrate populations.

During breeding season, which occurs from late spring to early autumn, females typically give birth to one to six young after a gestation period of 30 to 35 days. Newborns develop rapidly, within weeks gaining the ability to forage. Moles exhibit high reproductive potential; however, they can be subject to natural predators such as owls, lynx, and certain snakes.

Human interactions with kapaszkodókkal range from pest perception in agriculture to conservation interest. While some regions classify fossorial rodents as pests damaging crops, others recognize their ecological benefits. Various conservation efforts, including the protection of soil quality and management of habitats, aim to ensure sustainable populations while balancing agricultural needs.
