Kandidiaasiin, commonly known as a yeast infection, is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida. Candida is a type of yeast that is normally present on the skin and in mucous membranes, such as the mouth, vagina, and digestive tract, without causing any problems. However, certain conditions can lead to an overgrowth of Candida, resulting in an infection.

Factors that can contribute to candidiasis include weakened immune systems, such as those seen in individuals with HIV/AIDS, cancer, or those taking immunosuppressant medications. Antibiotic use can also disrupt the natural balance of microorganisms in the body, allowing Candida to proliferate. Hormonal changes, such as those during pregnancy or menstruation, can also play a role. Conditions like diabetes, which can lead to high blood sugar levels, create an environment conducive to yeast growth. Poor hygiene and wearing tight, non-breathable clothing are also sometimes cited as contributing factors.

Symptoms of candidiasis vary depending on the location of the infection. Oral candidiasis, or thrush, can manifest as white patches in the mouth, tongue, or throat, accompanied by soreness and difficulty swallowing. Vaginal candidiasis is characterized by itching, burning, redness, and a thick, white discharge. Cutaneous candidiasis, affecting the skin, typically appears as a red, itchy rash in warm, moist areas like the groin, armpits, or between the fingers and toes. Invasive candidiasis, a more serious form, occurs when Candida enters the bloodstream and can affect internal organs. Diagnosis is usually made based on clinical symptoms and laboratory tests, such as microscopic examination of samples or fungal cultures. Treatment typically involves antifungal medications, which can be topical or oral, depending on the severity and location of the infection.
