Kaloriylijäämä refers to a state where an individual consumes more calories than their body expends. This caloric surplus can lead to weight gain, primarily through the storage of excess energy as body fat. The body's energy balance is a fundamental concept in nutrition and metabolism. Calories are units of energy derived from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins in food. Energy expenditure, or the calories burned, occurs through basal metabolic rate (the energy needed for basic bodily functions at rest), the thermic effect of food (energy used for digestion), and physical activity.

When calorie intake consistently exceeds calorie expenditure, the surplus energy is converted and stored. The primary mechanism for this storage is the conversion of glucose into glycogen, which is stored in the liver and muscles. Once glycogen stores are full, any further excess calories are converted into triglycerides, which are stored in adipose tissue, commonly known as body fat.

The extent of weight gain from a caloric surplus depends on various factors, including the size of the surplus, the duration of the surplus, and individual metabolic differences, genetics, and activity levels. While a moderate caloric surplus can be beneficial for muscle building in conjunction with resistance training, a significant and prolonged surplus is generally associated with undesirable weight gain and potential health risks. Understanding and managing caloric intake relative to expenditure is a key aspect of weight management and maintaining overall health.
