kalojë

Kalojë is a grammatical form of the Albanian verb kaloj, used to express the present subjunctive (often called the optative) in dependent clauses. It translates roughly as “that (he/she/it) passes” or “that one passes,” depending on the subject. In Albanian, the present subjunctive mood is used to convey wishes, possibilities, necessities, or doubts within subordinate clauses introduced by conjunctions such as që.

In practice, kalojë appears in sentences where the speaker wants to indicate something desired, possible, or required or when reporting indirect speech. It commonly follows verbs of desire, preference, or obligation, and it can occur after expressions like “Dua që” (I want that) or “Është e domosdoshme që” (It is necessary that). For example: “Dua që ai të kalojë rrugën me kujdes” (I want him to cross the road carefully). Morphologically, kalojë is the form used for the present subjunctive with a third-person singular subject in standard Albanian, and it participates in the broader system of Albanian verb conjugation that marks mood rather than only tense. Other persons and numbers would use the corresponding subjunctive forms of kaloj.
