Kallpunktskompensation refers to a technique used in certain technical fields, particularly in measurement and instrumentation, to correct for temperature-induced errors at a reference point. The term itself is a compound of "kallpunkt" (cold junction) and "kompensation" (compensation).

This phenomenon is most commonly encountered when dealing with thermocouples, which are temperature sensors composed of two dissimilar metals. When these metals are joined at two different temperatures, a voltage is generated that is proportional to the temperature difference between the junctions. One junction is the "measuring junction" where the temperature is to be determined, and the other is the "reference junction" or "cold junction."

The voltage generated by the thermocouple is directly dependent on the temperature at the reference junction. If the temperature of this reference junction fluctuates, it will introduce an error into the temperature reading at the measuring junction. Kallpunktskompensation aims to mitigate this by ensuring that the reference junction is maintained at a stable, known temperature, or by electronically compensating for its variations.

Various methods exist for kallpunktskompensation. One common approach is to use an ice bath (historically, 0 degrees Celsius) as a stable reference temperature. More modern systems often employ electronic compensation, where a temperature sensor (like a thermistor or RTD) is placed near the reference junction, and its reading is used by the measurement circuitry to calculate and subtract the error caused by the reference junction's temperature. This allows for accurate temperature measurements even when the ambient conditions vary.
