Kalksystemer, often translated as "limestone systems" or "karst systems," refer to landforms and geological formations created by the dissolution of soluble rocks, primarily limestone. This process, known as karstification, occurs when slightly acidic water erodes and dissolves the calcium carbonate in the rock over long periods.

The most recognizable features of kalksystemer are underground drainage systems, which include caves, sinkholes (or dolines), and underground rivers. Sinkholes are depressions in the ground surface that form when the roof of an underground cavern collapses or when groundwater dissolves the bedrock beneath a soil layer. Caves can range from small passages to vast, intricate networks. Underground rivers are common, as surface water often disappears into sinkholes and flows through these subterranean channels, eventually resurfacing elsewhere.

Above ground, kalksystemer can exhibit features like disappearing streams, which flow into sinkholes and vanish, and uvalas, which are larger depressions formed by the coalescence of several sinkholes. The landscape is often characterized by a lack of surface water, with drainage occurring almost entirely underground.

The formation of kalksystemer is a slow geological process influenced by factors such as rainfall, rock solubility, and geological structure. These systems are found in various regions worldwide where soluble bedrock is present, including parts of Europe, Asia, and North America. They are important for understanding groundwater resources, as they often act as significant aquifers, but they can also pose challenges for water quality due to the direct connection between surface and underground water.
