Kaksoisseinämärakenne, also known as a double-wall structure, refers to a construction method where two parallel walls are separated by a cavity. This cavity can be filled with various materials, such as insulation, air, or other structural elements, depending on the intended purpose of the double wall.

In building construction, double walls are commonly employed to enhance thermal insulation. By creating an air gap or filling the cavity with insulating materials like fiberglass, mineral wool, or foam, heat transfer between the interior and exterior of a building is significantly reduced. This leads to improved energy efficiency, lower heating and cooling costs, and increased occupant comfort.

Beyond thermal performance, double-wall structures can also contribute to sound insulation. The air gap and the materials within it can absorb and dissipate sound waves, thereby reducing noise transmission between different spaces or from the outside environment. This is particularly beneficial in applications where acoustic privacy is important, such as apartment buildings, hotels, or recording studios.

In some industrial or specialized applications, double walls are used for containment or safety purposes. For instance, in tanks or pipelines storing hazardous materials, a double-wall design provides an extra layer of protection against leaks or spills. If the inner wall fails, the outer wall can contain the released substance, preventing environmental contamination or safety hazards.

The construction of double-wall systems can vary. They can be built using traditional masonry techniques, with two separate brick or block walls, or with precast concrete panels that are assembled on-site. In timber-frame construction, studs can be arranged to create a wider wall cavity for insulation. The choice of materials and construction method depends on factors such as structural requirements, cost considerations, and the desired performance characteristics.
