Kaiverrustaito ( Finnish for “engraving technique”) refers specifically to the art of incising designs into precious metal, traditionally gold and silver, for jewelry, small objects, and ecclesiastical items. The craft uses a variety of tools – pikes, chisels, Graver tools, and sharp knives – to produce clean, precise lines. An artisan may employ several styles, from the linear, linear engraved patterns of medieval goldsmiths to the subtle micro-engraving made possible by modern microneedles.
This technique has a long history in Finland, where metalwork has been practiced since the Iron Age.
