Kaitsegaas, also known as shielding gas or protective gas, is a substance used in various industrial processes, primarily welding and metal fabrication, to prevent contamination of the molten metal. It achieves this by displacing the surrounding atmosphere, which contains reactive elements like oxygen and nitrogen, from the area of the weld or molten pool. By creating an inert or semi-inert environment, kaitsegaas prevents oxidation, which can weaken the metal and degrade its properties.

The most common types of kaitsegaas used in arc welding are argon, helium, and carbon dioxide, or mixtures of these gases. Argon is widely favored due to its inert nature and relatively low cost.
