Kadaverdekomposition refers to the process of decomposition or decay of a dead body. This natural biological process begins shortly after death and involves a series of changes that break down the organic matter. The primary agents of decomposition are microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, which are naturally present in the body and the environment.

The decomposition process can be broadly divided into several stages. Initially, rigor mortis, a stiffening of the muscles, sets in, followed by algor mortis, a cooling of the body to match the ambient temperature. Autolysis, the self-digestion of cells by their own enzymes, also begins. Following these early changes, putrefaction occurs, characterized by the proliferation of bacteria that break down tissues, producing gases that can cause bloating. This stage is often accompanied by discoloration and the release of odors.

External factors significantly influence the rate and nature of kadaverdekomposition. Temperature is a crucial factor, with warmer conditions accelerating the process. Humidity, access to oxygen, and the presence of insects, like flies and beetles, which lay eggs on the body, also play vital roles. The environment, whether it be terrestrial, aquatic, or buried, will also present different conditions affecting decomposition. Forensic science utilizes the study of decomposition, including the identification of insect larvae (forensic entomology) and the analysis of soil and environmental conditions, to estimate the time since death and gain insights into circumstances surrounding a death.
