Kaarevuudet, a Finnish term, refers to curvature in a general sense. It is a fundamental concept in differential geometry and is used to describe how much a curve or surface deviates from being flat. In mathematics, curvature is quantified by specific measures, depending on the object being analyzed. For a curve in a plane, its curvature at a point indicates how quickly it is bending. A straight line has zero curvature, while a circle of radius r has a constant curvature of 1/r.

For surfaces, the concept of curvature is more complex and can be described by several different quantities. Principal curvatures, for instance, measure the maximum and minimum curvature at a given point on a surface, often associated with the directions of the surface's greatest and least bending. This intrinsic property means that if two surfaces have the same Gaussian curvature everywhere, they are isometric, meaning they can be mapped onto each other by distance-preserving transformations.
