Kõvajoodisega, commonly translated as brazing, is a metal-joining process where a filler metal is melted and flows into the joint by capillary action. The filler metal has a lower melting point than the base metals being joined, and it does not melt the base metals themselves. This distinguishes brazing from welding, where the base metals are melted. The filler metal forms a bond with the base metals when it solidifies.

The process requires the base metals to be cleaned thoroughly to remove any oxides, dirt, or grease. Flux is typically applied to the joint area before heating. The flux serves multiple purposes: it prevents oxidation of the base metals and filler metal during heating, it dissolves any existing oxides, and it helps the molten filler metal to wet and flow smoothly into the joint.

Heat is applied to the base metals until they reach the brazing temperature, which is above the melting point of the filler metal but below the melting point of the base metals. Once the base metals are hot enough, the filler rod or wire is brought into contact with the joint. The heat from the base metals melts the filler metal, which is then drawn into the gap between the parts by capillary action. After the filler metal has filled the joint, the heat source is removed, and the assembly is allowed to cool. The solidified filler metal creates a strong and durable joint.

Brazing is used in a wide variety of applications, including plumbing, HVAC systems, electrical connections, jewelry making, and the manufacturing of aerospace components. Its ability to join dissimilar metals and create strong, leak-proof joints at relatively low temperatures makes it a versatile joining technique.
