Kéztörések, or fractures of the hand, refer to a break in one of the many bones that make up the hand. These bones include the phalanges (bones of the fingers and thumb) and the metacarpals (bones in the palm of the hand). Fractures can also occur in the wrist bones, which are closely related to hand function.

Causes of hand fractures are typically due to direct trauma. Common scenarios include falls onto an outstretched hand, direct impact injuries such as a blow to the hand, or crushing injuries. Sports-related activities and accidents in the workplace are frequent contributors.

Symptoms of a kéztörés can include immediate and intense pain, swelling, bruising, and deformity of the hand or finger. The injured individual may experience difficulty moving the affected digit or the entire hand. In some cases, a visible bone fragment may protrude through the skin, indicating an open or compound fracture.

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination by a medical professional and imaging studies. X-rays are the primary tool used to identify the location and severity of the fracture. In some complex cases, a CT scan or MRI may be necessary for a more detailed assessment.

Treatment for hand fractures depends on the type and location of the break. Many simple fractures can be managed conservatively with immobilization, such as casting or splinting, to allow the bone to heal. More complex or displaced fractures may require surgical intervention. This can involve setting the bone in place and stabilizing it with pins, plates, or screws. Following immobilization or surgery, physical therapy is often recommended to restore full function, range of motion, and strength to the hand.
