jõulu

Jõulu is the Estonian word for Christmas. It is a major holiday celebrated in Estonia, typically on December 25th, though the festivities often begin on Christmas Eve, December 24th. Jõulu traditions in Estonia share many similarities with those in other European countries, but also possess unique local customs.

Central to Jõulu celebrations is the Christmas tree, often decorated with candles, glass ornaments, and tinsel. Families gather for a festive meal, with traditional dishes including roasted pork or turkey, sauerkraut, blood sausage, and various root vegetables. Gingerbread cookies, known as piparkoogid, are a popular treat, often enjoyed with mulled wine, or glögi.

The Christmas Eve is particularly significant. It is customary to visit cemeteries to remember deceased loved ones. Many families also attend church services. The exchange of gifts is an important part of the celebration, with children often anticipating presents from Jõuluvana, the Estonian equivalent of Santa Claus. Jõuluvana is often depicted arriving in a sleigh pulled by reindeer.

Throughout the holiday season, towns and cities are adorned with Christmas lights and decorations. Carol singing and attending Christmas markets are also popular activities. The period of Jõulu is a time for family, reflection, and celebration, marking the end of the year and the beginning of winter. The holiday officially lasts for several days, with Boxing Day, December 26th, also being a public holiday in Estonia.
