Jääpuikot, known in English as icicles, are formations of ice that are typically created when water drips from a surface and freezes. This phenomenon often occurs in cold weather when the ambient temperature is at or below the freezing point of water. The process begins with a source of water, such as melting snow or ice, or even water from a leaking pipe. As this water encounters sub-freezing air, it gradually freezes.

The characteristic conical or spear-like shape of an icicle is a result of the continuous dripping and freezing process. As a drop of water hangs from a surface, it begins to freeze from the outside in. As more water drips down, it flows over the already frozen surface, adding to the length and thickness of the icicle. The slower the drip and the colder the air, the longer and more slender the icicle tends to become.

Icicles are commonly found hanging from the eaves of roofs, on branches of trees, and on various structures where water can accumulate and drip. While they can be aesthetically pleasing, icicles can also pose a safety hazard. Their weight can increase significantly, potentially causing them to fall and injure people or damage property. They can also form on power lines, creating electrical hazards. Icicle formation is a natural meteorological event directly linked to temperature and the presence of water.
