Temperature is the primary driver of ice formation. When water temperature falls below 0 °C (32 °F), ice crystals grow outward, forming a porous structure that gradually densifies. Solar radiation, wind speed, and ocean currents modify the rate of heat loss, thereby altering the growth of ice fields.
