Jäännöshalvaus, also known as residual paralysis, is a neuromuscular complication that can occur after anesthesia, particularly after the administration of neuromuscular blocking agents. These agents are used to relax muscles during surgery, facilitating intubation and surgical procedures. While their effects are designed to be reversible, a complete return of muscle function may not always occur before the patient leaves the operating room.

This residual paralysis is typically assessed by measuring the patient's ability to sustain muscle contractions, often by observing their response to nerve stimulation. If muscle function is not fully restored, it can lead to several adverse outcomes. These include a higher risk of respiratory complications such as hypoxemia, airway obstruction, and even aspiration. Furthermore, patients may experience muscle weakness, making it difficult to cough, swallow, or move effectively, which can prolong their recovery.

Several factors can contribute to jäännöshalvaus. These include inadequate reversal of the neuromuscular blocking agent, the type and dose of the agent used, individual patient metabolism, and potential drug interactions. To mitigate this risk, anesthesiologists carefully monitor neuromuscular function and use reversal agents to antagonize the effects of neuromuscular blockers. However, even with these precautions, a small percentage of patients may still experience some degree of residual paralysis. Early detection and appropriate management are crucial to ensuring patient safety and optimizing postoperative recovery.
