It is a condition where patients may still experience weakness or lack of full motor control in certain muscle groups following surgery. This can manifest as difficulty moving limbs, impaired breathing, or delayed recovery from the effects of anesthetic muscle relaxants.

Several factors can contribute to jäännöshalvaus. The type and dosage of neuromuscular blocking agents used during surgery play a significant role. Inadequate reversal of these agents with specific medications can lead to prolonged paralysis. Patient-specific factors such as age, body weight, kidney and liver function, and the presence of certain medical conditions can also influence the metabolism and clearance of anesthetic drugs, increasing the risk of residual paralysis.

The primary method for diagnosing jäännöshalvaus involves clinical assessment of muscle strength and, more objectively, the use of neuromuscular monitoring devices. These devices measure the extent of nerve stimulation and muscle response, providing quantitative data on the degree of blockade remaining.

Management typically involves waiting for spontaneous recovery, administering reversal agents if indicated, and providing supportive care. Close monitoring of respiratory function and muscle strength is crucial. While often temporary, severe or prolonged jäännöshalvaus can lead to complications such as pneumonia, nerve injury, or prolonged hospital stays. Efforts to prevent it include careful drug selection, accurate dosing, and robust neuromuscular monitoring during and after anesthesia.
