Jäähdytyselementillä, known in English as a heatsink, is a passive heat exchanger that cools a device by dissipating heat into the surrounding medium. Typically, this medium is air, but it can also be water or other fluids. Heatsinks are commonly used in electronic devices to cool components that generate significant heat, such as central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), power transistors, and LED lights.

The fundamental principle behind a heatsink's operation is heat transfer. Heat generated by the component is transferred to the heatsink, usually through conduction. The heatsink is designed with a large surface area, often achieved through fins or pins, to maximize the rate of heat dissipation into the surrounding environment through convection and radiation. The effectiveness of a heatsink depends on factors such as its material, surface area, fin design, and the airflow around it. Materials like aluminum and copper are commonly used due to their high thermal conductivity.

The design of a heatsink is crucial for its performance. Factors like the number, size, and shape of fins, as well as the presence of holes or other features to enhance airflow, are carefully considered. In applications where natural convection is insufficient, forced convection is employed, often by attaching a fan to the heatsink. This combination of a heatsink and a fan is known as an active heatsink. The performance of heatsinks can be further improved by using thermal interface materials, such as thermal paste, between the heat-generating component and the heatsink to minimize thermal resistance.
