Jäykkäkouristus, known medically as tetanus, is a serious bacterial infection that affects the nervous system. It is caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which is commonly found in soil, dust, and animal feces. The bacteria can enter the body through breaks in the skin, such as cuts, scrapes, or puncture wounds.

Once inside the body, Clostridium tetani produces a potent neurotoxin called tetanospasmin. This toxin travels to the central nervous system, where it interferes with nerve signals that control muscle movement. The characteristic symptom of tetanus is painful muscle spasms and stiffness, particularly in the jaw, neck, and abdomen. This can lead to difficulty swallowing, breathing, and even "lockjaw," where the jaw muscles become so rigid that the mouth cannot be opened.

Tetanus is not contagious from person to person. The primary mode of transmission is through exposure to contaminated environments. Deep puncture wounds, animal bites, burns, and even minor cuts can serve as entry points for the bacteria if not properly cleaned.

Prevention is the most effective way to combat tetanus. Vaccination is highly recommended and is typically administered as part of routine childhood immunizations. Booster shots are recommended every ten years for adults to maintain immunity. Prompt and thorough cleaning of any wounds, especially those that are deep or dirty, is crucial. In cases of significant exposure or deep wounds, medical professionals may administer a tetanus shot to prevent the onset of the disease. While tetanus is a severe illness, prompt medical attention and supportive care can help manage symptoms and improve outcomes.
