Jätemääriin is a small municipality located in the Kainuu region of Finland. It covers an area of approximately 1,230 square kilometres, of which about 13 percent is covered by lakes and wetlands. The town has a population of around 3,600 residents, with a demographic composition that is largely homogeneous, but with a growing number of seasonal visitors during the summer months. The area lies at an elevation of about 150 metres above sea level and is characterised by a boreal forest climate that experiences cold, snowy winters and mild summers.

The geography of Jätemääriin is dominated by its network of lakes, including the notable Jätemäri Lake, from which the municipality derives its name. The surrounding landscape is largely composed of dense spruce and pine forests, interspersed with small agricultural plots and industrial forest clearings. The regional road network connects the municipality with the provincial capital of Kuopio to the south and the neighbouring communities of Taivalkoski and Suomussalmi to the north.

Historical records first mention Jätemääriin in the early 15th century, when it was a small settlement that served as a trading post on the route between the interior of Finland and the coast. In the 19th century, the area developed as a centre for timber processing, with sawmills and pulp factories contributing to local employment. The municipality was officially incorporated in 1865 and has since maintained a relatively stable population despite broader demographic trends in rural Finland.

Today Jätemääriin’s economy is diversified, with forestry and wood processing remaining important, complemented by a growing tourism sector that promotes lake recreation and cross‑country skiing. The annual Jätemääriin Harvest Festival, held in late September, is a key cultural event that attracts participants from surrounding regions and showcases local artisans, traditional food, and folklore performances. The municipality also hosts a community library, a primary school, and a small health centre, providing essential services to residents and visitors alike.
