Jänneongelmat, often referred to as tendinopathies, are a common group of musculoskeletal conditions affecting tendons. Tendons are the fibrous cords that connect muscles to bones, enabling movement. Jänneongelmat typically arise from overuse, repetitive strain, or acute injury. The most prevalent symptoms include pain, tenderness, stiffness, and sometimes swelling in the affected area. The pain is often exacerbated by movement and may improve with rest.

Commonly affected tendons include those in the shoulder (rotator cuff), elbow (tennis elbow and golfer's elbow), wrist, hip, knee (patellar tendon), and ankle (Achilles tendon). The underlying pathology can involve inflammation (tendinitis) or degeneration (tendinosis), although the distinction is not always clear and both can coexist. Factors contributing to the development of jänneongelmat include insufficient warm-up, poor biomechanics, inadequate training load progression, and certain systemic conditions.

Diagnosis is usually based on a thorough medical history and physical examination. Imaging studies like ultrasound or MRI may be used to assess the extent of tendon damage. Treatment strategies are multifaceted and aim to reduce pain and inflammation, promote healing, and restore function. These often include rest, ice, physical therapy focusing on stretching and strengthening exercises, and modification of aggravating activities. In persistent cases, other interventions such as corticosteroid injections, shockwave therapy, or surgery might be considered. Prevention is key and involves proper training techniques, gradual increases in physical activity, and addressing any underlying biomechanical issues.
