Juxtaarticular is an anatomical and clinical term used to describe structures or changes located near a joint. It denotes proximity to a joint, typically outside the joint capsule itself, and is applied across anatomy, radiology, and rheumatology.

Etymology and scope: The word combines Latin juxta meaning near or beside and articular meaning pertaining to a joint. In practice, juxtaarticular refers to tissues, spaces, or pathologies that surround a joint rather than those contained within the joint cavity (intra-articular). It is often used to distinguish perijoint zones from intra-articular structures.

Clinical and radiologic usage: Juxtaarticular findings are important in diagnosing and monitoring joint-related conditions. They point to processes affecting the tissues around a joint, such as bone near the joint margins, the immediate periarticular soft tissues, or the subchondral areas adjacent to articular surfaces. Common examples include juxtaarticular osteoporosis or osteopenia seen around affected joints on radiographs, and juxtaarticular erosions or soft-tissue swelling seen in inflammatory arthropathies. Recognizing juxtaarticular changes can aid in differentiating inflammatory from purely intra-articular pathology and in assessing disease activity or structural damage.

Limitations and related terms: Juxtaarticular should not be confused with intra-articular (within the joint capsule) or periarticular (surrounding the joint to a broader extent). The term is most useful when describing localized changes in tissues immediately adjacent to joints.
