Jutuviis (plural jutuviisid) is the manner or technique by which a narrative is presented. Common jutuviis include first-person narration, which uses “I” and offers an intimate, subjective perspective; third-person narration, which may be close to a character (limited) or broader and more detached (omniscient); multiple perspectives or alternating narrators; direct dialogue with minimal narration; descriptive or lyrical styles rich in imagery; stream-of-consciousness, which presents thoughts as they occur; and epistolary or diary-like forms, which present the story through letters or journals; and documentary or reportorial styles, which emphasize factual reporting. Jutuviis also relates to the use of irony, reliability, and narrative distance, as well as to tempo and rhythm.
