Jousting, or joustaminen in Finnish, is a historical competitive sport in which two armored riders on horseback confront each other with lances, aiming to strike the opponent or unseat them. Traditionally, the discipline combined horsemanship, armor, and weapon skills, and it was showcased at organized tournaments or fairs.

Historically, jousting arose in medieval Western Europe and evolved from cavalry training into a formalized contest during the High Middle Ages. It reached peak popularity from the 12th to the 16th century, serving as both sport and demonstrations of chivalry. Over time, changes in warfare and social structures led to its decline as a routine activity, but interest was revived in modern times through living history events, Renaissance fairs, and specialized clubs.

Equipment and safety play a central role in jousting. Competitors wear protective armor, including helmets and reinforced garments appropriate for mounted combat. They ride trained horses and use blunt or specially designed lances to reduce injury risk. Modern practice often incorporates protective barriers, standardized equipment, and safety protocols to manage speed and impact. In competition, scoring and outcomes may depend on whether a lance strikes a designated target, causes a fall or unseating, or achieves other agreed-upon criteria, with rules varying by organizing body.

Today, jousting is kept alive by clubs, regional associations, and event organizers around the world. It appears at historical reenactments, cultural festivals, and sport venues, sometimes with formalized regional or international competitions. While it remains a niche activity, jousting continues to be presented as a showcase of horsemanship, armor, and medieval martial culture, balancing tradition with contemporary safety standards.
