Jordporøsitet refers to the presence and distribution of void spaces, or pores, within a soil mass. These pores are the spaces between soil particles that can be filled with air, water, or a combination of both. The total volume of these pore spaces relative to the total volume of the soil is known as the porosity. Porosity is typically expressed as a percentage or a decimal.

The size, shape, and distribution of pores significantly influence various soil properties. For example, soils with larger, well-connected pores tend to have higher hydraulic conductivity, meaning water can move through them more easily. This is crucial for drainage and for the transport of nutrients and gases. Conversely, soils with smaller, more tortuous pores may retain more water but have lower permeability.

Soil texture, which is determined by the relative proportions of sand, silt, and clay particles, is a primary factor controlling porosity. Sandy soils, with their larger particle sizes, generally have larger pores and higher porosity. Clay soils, composed of very fine particles, can have a wide range of pore sizes, from large macropores to tiny micropores, and their overall porosity can vary greatly depending on how the particles are arranged.

Soil structure, or the arrangement of soil particles into aggregates, also plays a vital role in determining pore space. Well-aggregated soils often exhibit a hierarchical pore system, with larger pores between aggregates and smaller pores within them. Compaction can reduce pore space, leading to decreased aeration, drainage, and root penetration. Understanding jordporøsitet is fundamental in fields such as agriculture, civil engineering, and environmental science for managing water resources, plant growth, and soil stability.
