The plant is often considered a weed due to its rapid growth and ability to spread easily.

Jokitulvasasoja typically reaches heights of 10 to 50 centimeters, with slender, hairy stems and alternate, oval-shaped leaves. Its small, greenish-white flowers produce round, glossy berries that turn from green to yellow, then black when fully ripe.
