jogosítvány

Jogosítvány is the official document that authorizes a person to drive motor vehicles on public roads in Hungary. It also serves as proof of identity and a record of the holder’s driving privileges. The license is issued by the competent government authority responsible for road transport and conforms to the EU standard driving license format, so it is generally valid throughout the European Union and other EEA states.

The card lists the vehicle categories the holder may operate. These categories follow the EU system and include examples such as AM (mopeds and light quadricycles), A1, A2, A (motorcycles), B (cars) and BE (car with trailer), as well as C, CE (trucks) and D, DE (buses) and other categories such as T for tractors.

Obtaining a jogosítvány requires meeting age thresholds, undergoing medical examination and vision test, and passing theory and practical driving examinations. Applicants typically attend training at licensed driving schools, pay fees, and submit identity documents. After meeting all requirements, the license is issued as a plastic card containing the holder’s data and license categories.

Validity and renewal: Licenses carry an expiry date and must be renewed before it expires. Renewal may require updated medical or eyesight checks, especially for older drivers or for certain categories. The license is valid in other EU/EEA states; exchanging a non-Hungarian license is possible under certain conditions, and visitors may drive with their home license for a limited period or with an International Driving Permit.

Penalties: Driving without a valid license or outside authorized categories is illegal and can lead to fines, license suspension, revocation, or other penalties.
