Järjestysasteikkoja, known in English as ordinal scales, are a type of measurement scale used in statistics. They represent data that can be ordered or ranked, but the differences between the ranks are not necessarily equal or quantifiable. This means that while we know one category is "higher" or "more" than another, we cannot say by how much.

Common examples of ordinal scales include customer satisfaction surveys that use responses like "poor," "fair," "good," and "excellent." Another example is the ranking of competitors in a race, where finishers are placed first, second, third, and so on. Educational levels, such as "high school diploma," "bachelor's degree," and "master's degree," also form an ordinal scale.

When analyzing data measured on an ordinal scale, statistical methods are limited. Measures of central tendency like the median are appropriate, as they represent the middle value in a ranked dataset. However, the mean is generally not suitable because it assumes equal intervals between data points. Similarly, measures of dispersion are typically focused on the spread of ranks rather than the precise differences between them. Understanding the nature of ordinal scales is crucial for selecting appropriate analytical techniques and drawing valid conclusions from data.
