Izomrángások, also known as muscle twitches or fasciculations, are involuntary, brief, and spontaneous contractions of a small group of muscle fibers. These are typically noticeable as subtle movements or tremors under the skin. They can occur in almost any muscle group and are generally harmless.

The exact cause of most benign izomrángások is not fully understood, but they are often associated with factors such as stress, anxiety, fatigue, excessive caffeine intake, or certain medications. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances can also contribute. Sometimes, a twitch might be a sign that a muscle is overused or fatigued from physical exertion. These types of twitches usually resolve on their own once the contributing factor is removed or addressed.

While most izomrángások are benign, persistent or widespread twitches, especially when accompanied by muscle weakness, atrophy, or pain, could indicate an underlying neurological condition. Conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), spinal muscular atrophy, or peripheral nerve disorders can manifest with fasciculations. In such cases, a medical evaluation is necessary to determine the cause and appropriate treatment. Diagnosis often involves a neurological examination, and sometimes nerve conduction studies or electromyography (EMG) may be performed.
