iyomante
Iyomante is a sacred Ainu ritual traditionally practiced in Hokkaido, Japan. It is a funeral ceremony for a brown bear, considered a divine being in Ainu culture. The Ainu people believe that the spirit of the bear, upon returning to the spirit world, will intercede with the gods on their behalf and bring good fortune. The ritual involves raising a bear cub, often from when it is orphaned, for a period of one to three years, during which time it is cared for and revered.
