Clinical progress has been achieved primarily in early-phase studies to evaluate safety and preliminary efficacy. Manufacturing scalability, quality control, and cost are active areas of development to ensure consistent cell products.

Future directions include improving maturation and glucose responsiveness, implementing immune protection (encapsulation or local immunomodulation), and using gene editing to reduce immunogenicity. The field also explores patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cells to minimize rejection and better disease modeling for type 1 diabetes and drug discovery.
