Isiksüsteeme, often translated as personality systems or character systems, refers to the concept of individuals who experience themselves as having multiple distinct personalities or identities within a single body. These identities, sometimes referred to as alters or parts, may have different names, ages, genders, histories, and mannerisms. The most recognized clinical diagnosis associated with this phenomenon is Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder.

The emergence of distinct identities is generally understood to be a coping mechanism developed in response to severe childhood trauma, particularly chronic abuse. The mind, under overwhelming duress, may fragment to compartmentalize traumatic experiences and emotions, allowing the child to survive by dissociating from the overwhelming reality. Over time, these dissociated parts can develop into complex and independent identities.

Individuals with isiksüsteeme may experience a range of symptoms including memory gaps (amnesia), disorientation, anxiety, depression, and self-harm. The experience of switching between identities can be distressing and disruptive to daily life, affecting relationships, work, and overall functioning. Therapeutic approaches often focus on achieving integration of the identities, or at least fostering cooperation and communication between them, to improve overall well-being and reduce distress. Diagnosis and treatment are complex and require specialized expertise.
