Ise is a city located in Mie Prefecture, Japan. It is most famous for being the site of the Ise Grand Shrine (Ise Jingu), the most sacred Shinto shrine in Japan. The shrine complex consists of two main shrines, Geku (Outer Shrine) and Naiku (Inner Shrine), and many smaller shrines. Ise Jingu is dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess and ancestor of the Japanese imperial family. The main shrine buildings are ritually rebuilt every twenty years in a process called Shikinen Sengu, which has been carried out for over 1300 years.
The city of Ise is situated on the eastern coast of the Kii Peninsula, facing Ise Bay.
